Teaching Philosophy

Singing is an elevated extension of speech, a means to convey thoughts and emotions on a deeper level. True artistry in singing starts from within: it begins in the heart and soul, moves to the mind, and then inspires breath and vocal tone with intent, emotion, and conviction. In working with young artists, it is necessary to not only build their voices, but also to help give them the tools to unlock truly expressive singing.  This requires a multi-faceted approach, which; because of each human being’s unique vocal  instrument, psycho-emotional makeup, variances of culture and upbringing, must be tailored to each individual student’s needs.

In my teaching, I naturally draw upon the classical bel canto techniques passed down through the oral tradition, complemented by insights from luminaries like Cornelius Reid and Richard Miller. I emphasize the importance of maintaining a noble posture, allowing for an optimal breath intake, and mastering the controlled release of that breath. By regulating the diaphragm’s natural movement, singers achieve balanced breath pressure and a supported onset that enables vocal folds to respond naturally. This foundation supports a resonant and effortless vocal production.

Pure vowel formation and tonal consistency are central to my approach. Through a thorough understanding of vocal tract physiology and targeted exercises from the traditions of Lamperti, Garcia, and including concepts taught in vocology, (such as SOVT exercises, source/filter theory), singers develop legato, flexibility, focus, range, and vocal freedom. Activating the articulators while freeing the tongue, jaw, and body from undue tension enhances natural, expressive singing, making singers not only vocalists but compelling communicators on stage. This disciplined practice automates the physical aspects of singing, allowing the singer to focus on their primary goal: connecting with their audience.

Words are an invaluable gift to the singing artist. While a beautiful tone is vital, clarity of diction is essential for conveying meaning. Language skills, rhetorical understanding, and literary knowledge are crucial for a singer to interpret and communicate text authentically. Developing this expressive voice involves not just technical skill but also self-discovery. A singer must connect with the text personally before communicating it outwardly, unlocking a genuine emotional response that resonates with audiences. I endeavor to encourage the creative spirit within my students, by both giving direction and instruction, but also allowing them to become authentic, direct communicators.

Creating a nurturing, supportive, and safe learning environment is fundamental to my teaching. I respect each student as a unique individual, meeting them where they are and guiding them in developing their vocal technique, color, and style. My goal is to foster artists who can passionately and creatively express themselves, helping them find their voices in a world in need of connection and understanding.
